Swedish doctors demand legal rights to experiment on patients.
In an article to-day in the opinion pages of Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter, (Swedish only) eleven prominent Swedish physicians demand the right for doctors and hospitals to test new medication and methods on patients too sick to give their consent. The present legislation demands that doctors get permission for such experiments from both the patient's next of kin and from a publicly appointed "gode man" (public custodian) before experimentation can take place. Legal practicalities, however, prohibit the appointment of such a custodian, thus making experiments on non-consenting patients illegal. The eleven doctors now propose legislation that would facilitate experimenting on non-consenting patients by substituting the need for approval by a public custodian with a simple okay from medical staff. This mengelian idea only serves to prove that memories are short, indeed, especially when there is something to gain by being forgetful.
